“Don your Halloween costume and head up to Heckscher Farm at Stamford Museum & Nature Center to trick or treat with our farm friends on Oct. 31, from 1 pm to 3 pm.

Grab a map and head off in search of different “treats” at the trick-or-treat stations around Heckscher Farm. See what Dakota the Clydesdale, Big Sis the pig, and Suffy the sheep have to offer. Then, stop by Overbrook for “Ick-Fest” and get slimy with our slime table, visit with some live reptiles and bugs, and create a craft around some of favorite Halloween critters!

Trick-or-treat on Heckscher Farm is rain or shine and free with gate admission.

Today, I got a taste of the creative and stunning decor temporarily appearing in a historic Shippan waterfront home. “Bubble” bathroom tiles, sharp blue and orange dining room, a bedroom patio set for afternoon tea (overlooking Long Island Sound), each room is a distinctive signature of its creator, and provides innumerable ideas for home decoration (as well as contact information for each Interior Decorator). In my opinion, the $30 entry fee to the Shippan Designer Show House – is a deal in itself – since the funds go directly to the terrific Stamford Museum and Nature Center. Like all non-profits, the SMNC is suffering from city budget cuts and this is an innovative way to make up at least some lost funding.

That said, this IS an OnTheCheap blog – and so, here’s a way to get into the Show House without paying the $30, and give back at the same time: volunteer to be a docent/greeter.

Sure, babies are cute. Just ask the producers of the new documentary, “Babies,” which has become a world-wide sensation. Here in Stamford, we’re celebrating babies, too. Down on the farm. At the Stamford Museum and Nature Center, Butterscotch the goat is preparing to give birth to her new brood, and there are flocks of newborn sheep, ducklings and chicks, too. Come for Spring On the Farm on Sunday May 16 from 11am-4pm to see the babies, and enjoy border collie and oxen demonstrations, children’s games and prizes, face-painting, refreshments.

Our wonderful local treasure, the Planetarium at the Stamford Museum and Nature Center, offers star-gazing and enlightening lectures about our night skies on Friday nights free for members and nearly free ($3, $2) for nonmembers. Tomorrow night – Friday January 8th – the planetarium show features Mars: The Red Planet

“Come join us for a NEW exciting series of astronomy programs! Start by enjoying a presentation on a variety of fun and interesting topics, followed by a visit to view the night sky through our 22-inch telescope.

Why is Mars “red”? How long is a Martian day? Does Mars have seasons? This program will answer your questions about the planet Mars, explain why it is the most Earth-like planet in the Solar System, and tell you where you can find it in the night sky.

Before heading into bleak, slushy winter, Mother Nature shows us one final blast of finery. There’s nothing like a crisp Autumn day to put one in a cheerful mood, and even better if there are great activities and eats to go along with it. Leave it to our very own Stamford Museum and Nature Center to help us “celebrate fall’s bounty” with a Harvest Festival on Sunday October 18th from 11am to 4pm. A nice mix of activities are included free with admission, including crafts, games, storytelling, Bounce House, Parades, Hay Bale Maze, Face Paining popcorn. There’s also plenty on sale – such as cauldron-cooked-corn-on-the-cob, cotton candy, apple cider, donuts – all those carry-along foods that, in our primitive brains, belong to Autumn alone. And, of course, there’s a Pick-You-Own Pumpkin patch, which, in this neck of the woods is as much a tradition as apple-picking or starting school.

Let me plug the great benefits of being a SM&NC Member here. For just $80 per year, your whole family can enjoy free admission and half price admission on Festival days. This is no small thing. I raised my kids at the newly built Nature Center Playground – it was our daily stop on the way home from preschool. And I must have hundreds of pictures of them giving the free range chickens and peacocks their daily workout. I kept my SM&NC Membership Card in my car’s visor – ever at the ready – for years and years. My kids are grown, but I get a wistful feeling every time I drive by the waterfall entrance.
